This has long been one of my favorite est em mangas, and I congratulate SuBLime for publishing it in paper. I'll treasure it forever along with my other est em books.

Tableau Numero 20 consists of a three-chapter main story and a collection of one-shots. The main story revolves around Maurice, an art restorer, and the surprises he finds when he is finally able to have the painting he has always longed to see before his eyes. The love story is both funny and moving. A bonus is that there is some fun art history in there (bogus and real).

The one-shots are often just as touching, lovely, and funny as the main story in est em's collections. My favorite in this book is about a flamenco dancer. Est em shows off her great imagination and sense of design in the panels where Jesus dances. But the best part of the story is how the mangaka conveys Jesus's passion for flamenco. There is one other short story set in Spain in this collection. I don't know if both of these emerged from her fact-finding trip to Spain when she was researching Ultras (another of my favorites, which is available in digital edition here), but I just love seeing her love of Spain emerge in her stories.

Simple, niceley told stories with appealing drawings.
This is a great collection. I definitely recommend it to people who want some short, cute stories.
Tableau Numero 20 is a set of short stories of similar themes and bookended by the same story. The author is Maki Satoh, whose pen name is 'est em' (S and M), and who has been praised for her works having depth and maturity.

Her work here reminds me a lot of several mature Josei writers who are concerned more with moods and themes than straightforward plots. Those looking for a quick fix of yaoi will probably want to look elsewhere since the stories in this manga are concerned more with an exploration of memories than romance or sex.

For this volume, I feel the pathos can work with or against the stories. Here, it felt more of the latter than the former. The characters in the stories are so lost in their memories that we aren't really given any dimensionality in them - it's more about the lover lost than the person telling the story. That frustrating distance has to be embraced in order for the reader to really get into the stories - because it's not about an arc or storyline so much as a meandering emotional reverie.

This is a mature, thematic manga - for those who want more depth and emotion in their reads. It has a very throwback feel to the melodrama manga of the 1970s.
