I wish I could populate this review with the one-liners that had me laughing so loudly I irritated the cat. What is it about the South that produces such brilliant, colorful, witty, acerbic hothouse flowers? I have seen the names Sedaris and Sessums mentioned frequently in the reviews here. In my humble opinion, Mr. Leleux's style harkens back to Tennessee Williams and, as mentioned, Truman Capote in that he has taken a popular genre (the bitingly-funny-gay-coming-of-age-tale) and given it a transformative incandescence which places it in its own class. In a way, like Capote, he has re-invented a literary form -- Leleux gives his "characters" marvelous lines that we know were shaped by his ear. But we don't mind. It's not so much that what he writes is merely stylish, which it is. It's also that what he writes is really funny. Admitting that humor was the only way Leleux could deter childhood bullies, Leleux packs some serious flesh and muscle onto the bare bones of his story and, before we know it, cardboard characters we would not necessarily care about in real life are glittering, fascinating 3D comedians who are making us laugh out loud. In my humble opinion, few writers today possess the stylistic chops of Mr. Leleux which, when combined with his searing, acerbic humor, marks him as a writer to watch. And read.

5 Stars. Great read!

The Memoirs of a Beautiful Boy Robert Leleux 9780312361686 Books Reviews

Robert's mastery of writing is evidenced thorough some very flowery descriptions and wording. His characters and situations come to life and it was an easy book to read. I would recommend the book to anyone interested in a fairly easy escape from the cold northern winter blues. He'll light you up with his humor and keep you curiously interested in how this time in his life unfolds...
If you purchase this book based upon the New York Times Review (as I did), you definitely will NOT be disappointed....what a wonderful new writer is Robert Leleux. While aptly compared to Augusten Burroughs and David Sedaris, he also brings a fresh experience and voice to the memoir genre. I had so much fun reading this book, I truly hated for it to end. It was like discovering a new friend. Highly recommended. I eagerly look forward to Mr. Leleux's next writing endeavor.
a funny, sad, and surprising story of a "beautiful boy" raised by his mother in the 1980s south Texas cultures.
Every once in a while you read a writer who is so deliciously funny, he makes you wet your spanks. For me this year, that writer was Robert Leleux. Reading about his over-the-top, best-friend-Mother--with whom he spent his childhood Saturday's at Neiman Marcus getting his hair styled and nails lacquered--caused me to ping-pong back and forth between not believing their outrageous behavior and clever dialogue could be true--and wanting with all my heart for it to be absolutely, word-for-word exactly the way he wrote it.

I laughed when Jessica prayed for Jesus to smite the cars off the freeways when she was in a hurry. I cried when Robert watched all of his earthly goods ruined in a freak summer downpour. And I wet those aforementioned spanks when Jessica's infected lip implant flew across the room, injuring a small child.

Of course, one of my favorite analogies was when he described his mother's new fake hair as looking and sounding like a yellow pom pom. It was as if he wrote that line with me in mind...

If Texas is this funny--I can't wait for him to write about New York City. This cheerleader gives Beautiful a two-pom-pom cheer!
This book shouldn't be so good. It's about a short phase of a young person's life. Yet the author's style is so compelling, his descriptions so witty, his telling so funny, that I couldn't put the book down. Bravo for a promising new voice.
Clever, entertaining, and touching. Highly recommended. You will read this one quickly and enjoy every moment. I look forward to more from this writer!
I really think every review where Robert is compared to David Sedaris it only hints at how talented he is. We all love David Sedaris right? Your love for Robert will be larger than that!!

And don't be misled that its just another southern story about another southern mama! Because believe me when I tell you you do not have to be southern to appreciate a good divorcee losing her damn mind and her hair! And the story being told from the point of her son who is incredibly in love with her--- flaws and all---is so touching!

I had to put this book down and cackle my head off so many times and wipe tears away before opening back up to start reading again. And if I read it at night I couldn't wait to get up the next morning and get on the phone and laugh all over again talking about it with my sister.

You'll read it and before you finish it you will buy a copy just so you can give it away and have a friend reading and laughing with you!
